Josep Presseguer will speak with the CEOs of eight leading Spanish companies to explain the Cooperative Group’s commitment to the UN Guiding Principles on Human Rights, in an event that will be held on June 15 and 16 in an ‘online’ format due to to the pandemic.
The Fruits de Ponent Cooperative Group has been selected by the United Nations Global Compact to participate in the Leaders Summit, an annual meeting that is usually held by the UN in New York but which, due to the pandemic, will take place this year in an online format ‘. Fruits de Ponent will be the only Spanish agri-food cooperative that will be present at an event chaired by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and which will feature almost 200 leaders from non-governmental organizations and companies.
The person in charge of representing Fruits de Ponent will be its CEO, Josep Presseguer, who will base his speech – recorded on video from Alcarràs, the Group’s headquarters, and which will be broadcast at 1:45 p.m. on June 16 on the official channel of the contest – to detail on what the Cooperative Group’s commitment to integrate such principles into business strategy is based, in all areas of the organization and in all the interest groups with which they interact. This year also coincides with the tenth anniversary of the guiding principles on human rights established by this global organization to indicate to governments and companies how to act in favor of these rights.
In his analysis, Josep Presseguer will emphasize that the commitment is reinforced by the cooperative DNA, which leads them to be focused on people and respect for the planet, since healthy food cannot be produced in a sustainable way without fertile soil, without good management of water resources, without biodiversity, without access to fair trade and without decent work for workers.
Global Compact is an international initiative of the United Nations that promotes the implementation of Ten Universally Accepted Principles to promote sustainable development in the areas of human rights and business, labor standards, the environment and the fight against corruption in the activities and business strategy of companies. . With more than 12,500 member entities in more than 160 countries, it is the largest corporate social responsibility initiative in the world.
During the Leaders Summit, topics such as the convergent crises of climate change, the global pandemic of Covid-19, the worsening of social and economic inequality, and rampant corruption will also be addressed, while offering a roadmap for a sustainable recovery.
